Wanguru Airstrip in Mwea , Kirinyaga County has been rehabilitated after many years of abandonment .
The facility which is managed by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), has the runway murrumed to handle light aircrafts .
According to the area MP Kabinga Wachira the plans are underway to have the runway tarmacked .
The Legislator said the facility had deteriorated after many years of neglect leading to women using it to dry their farm produce .
“For many years the airstrip had been converted into a drying facility for cereals , grazing ground and a driving school ground but all this mess has been cleared after the ongoing rehabilitation and this is also where military helicopters have been landing during the ongoing Mashujaa Day preparations ,” Wachira said .
He said the ultra –modern Wanguru stadium is a game changer in the county as local and international events will from now henceforth be held there .
The MP also noted how Ngurubani town has been modernised with most of its streets now tarmacked .
“When I look at the amount of development that has been brought to Mwea , I see real transformation and our densely populated constituency is at least now looking like the rest but I still promise our people more before the end of this parliamentary term ,” he said.
Wachira while enumerating the various development projects being undertaken in the area , the legislator cited the Sh 15 billion Wamumu KEMRI hospital whose construction is on-going , the tarmacking of Kagio –Mutithi road among others .
Also of economic benefit is the price of paddy rice at Sh 85 per kilogram which came about after Wachira urged president Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene as the local farmers used to get a row deal from brokers and cartels.
